PROUDFOOT - FLOWER OF LONDON

It’s been six years since Proudfoot released the BJ Cole-produced Lincolnshire, an album with its boots in Nashville but its head in the English county of Michael Proudfoot’s birth in the prairies of the East Midlands.

Since then, Michael and guitarist/collaborator Duncan Kerr have been meeting in the former’s basement, recording demos for a new record. Flower Of London is the result. Duncan Kerr is a veteran guitar wrangler from Stiff Records recording artists Plummet Airlines and their spin-off The Favourites, two almost-made-it outfits that morphed out of Nottingham’s pub rock and punk scene. Michael, then singing in wine bars and restaurants to bolster his student grant, was a fan of both these bands. “I thought, if ever I have a band, I want that guitar player in it,” he says of Kerr. A mixture of happenstance and necessity brought the two together almost ten years ago and they have been working together in London ever since as Kerr’s other gig in psych-punk outfit The Brainiac 5 allows.

Both Proudfoot and Kerr knew that this record would be different from Lincolnshire. “I love country music and early rock n’ roll, but I am essentially a child of the 60s,” says Proudfoot. “I can still vividly remember the moment The Beatles came into my world via Thank Your Lucky Stars. We lived, literally, in the middle of nowhere surrounded by potato and wheat fields, The Beatles sound made it seem as if anything were possible and I fell for it hook line and sinker. Music has been in my life ever since”

Flower Of London coalesces Michael Proudfoot’s interests in The Beatles and the Beat Boom, soul, folk and reggae with Kerr’s virtuoso powerpop/punk/country-rock guitar chops into something not too far from the mature New Wave pop of Costello, Parker and Difford & Tilbrook. This time, Michael’s songs are drawn from a wider, more urban spectrum. Flower Of London trades in the anomalies of life, love, leaving and those he has known, good and bad. Album opener ‘Pathfinders’ is about his mother’s first fiancĂ©, an RAF pilot who perished over the English Channel. “The good thing about songwriting,” says Proudfoot, “….is that you can make a single statement about a lot of things or a statement about a single moment. It seems to me the things that affect us most are like that, they are global and big like politics and war or tiny moments in the macro when someone says or does something you love or hate…. That’s what this record is about”.

The album release will be preceded by the single/video ‘Pathfinders’.

BLACK BOMBERS

Black Bombers are a Rock‘n’Roll band from Birmingham, England and Black Bombers is their debut album!

It was recorded virtually live in their rehearsal studio over one weekend with engineer/producer Paul Gray, with minimal overdubs, hence the primal, untamed sound. Combining elements of UK77 punk, Chiswick-era Motorhead and, almost inevitably, The Stooges, close links with Midlands luminaries Swell Maps and The Nightingales might go some way to explain the “hint of post-punk steeliness and economy” that Gus Ironside of Vive Le Rock magazine identified in Black Bombers’ garage-wall of sound.

Black Bombers are Dave Twist – drums, Darren Birch – bass guitar, and Alan Byron – guitar and vocals. Darren Birch was a founder member of notorious Birmingham sleaze-rockers Gunfire Dance. Signed to Island and produced by The Damned’s Brian James and Rat Scabies, they remain highly regarded by connoisseurs of their genre. He also serves in Heartbreaker Walter Lure’s touring band.

A former member of seminal punk/post-punk band The Prefects, Dave Twist features on their Peel Session derived, and much anthologised, ‘Going Through The Motions’ single for Rough Trade, as well as touring and recording several albums with The Tenderhooks alongside Dave Kusworth.of The Jacobites.

Black Bombers’ debut release was the limited edition 7” single ‘Crazy’ b/w ‘That Kind’ in early 2015 on their own Key of E label. It sold out within a week, earning a second pressing.

"This debut offering is nothing short of being a collection of gutter anthems, classics in the making from a parallel universe where the punk wars were won by the righteous, Nikki Sudden was not only still alive but Minister for Culture and Wayne Kramer was the focus of a major religion." DANCING ABOUT ARCHITECTURE

“Alan Byron has an immediately likeable, spooky, sick croon – this is ominous Super 8 film music for angry eyed adults who don’t go to malls – smoky, muscular, tight...” SUGARBUZZ

“The sort of song best played at stun volume – Dave Twist’s heavily propulsive drumming recalls Rock Action – paint-stripper guitar, Darren Birch’s bass-line throb and a fuck you vocal make ‘Crazy’ glow with menace...” I-94 BAR

“‘Crazy’ is menacing and loose and has the beating heart of some the finer bands of our time, like The Stooges – with some 'Music For Pleasure' era Damned thrown in for good measure, this is fantastic stuff...” UBER ROCK

RUMMAGE - SOMEWHERE ELSE

Rummage is one of the many projects of Scottish musician Mark Mulholland, in which he teams up with a couple of friends and long-time musical collaborators,  Rusty Miller and James Finch Jr from Jackpot on a dozen of his songs, laid down at a studio near San Francisco in 2014.

Born in Glasgow, Mark has been playing in bands since the late '80s, travelling the world with stops in Berlin, Paris, Prague and Galway along the way, combining his solo career with various bands and projects such as acoustic roots outfit Two Dollar Bash and indie-rockers Impure Thoughts, as well as session work with Nikki Sudden, Captain Sensible and many others. In 2010, he moved to Haiti for four years, during which time he collaborated on the just released Afro-Haitian Experimental Orchestra project with legendary Nigerian drummer Tony Allen and also with dEUS guitarist Craig Ward, before relocating to Bamako, Mali, where he is working on several new projects with many of the fantastic musicians there, including internationally acclaimed kora maestros Toumani Diabate and Madou Sidiki Diabate.

While in Prague in the early 90s, Mark met Rusty Miller, a songwriter and multi-instrumentalist from Northern California, who has made many albums with his own bands Jackpot and Nightgown, as well as being an in-demand sideman for the likes of Cake, Chuck Prophet and Jason Lytle. Rusty’s European tours and Mark’s US trips permitted the pair to meet quite frequently, before both Jackpot and Two Dollar Bash were invited to the prestigious SXSW festival in Austin, Texas in 2007, where Mark also became firm friends with Jackpot guitarist James Finch Jr. SXSW turned into a regular meeting, and later James worked with Mark on the recording of his second solo album, 2011’s critically acclaimed The Cactus And The Dragon.

The trio met in California in May 2014 to finally record the album they had talked for years of making. Booking time in the studio James was working in at Stinson Beach, Marin County, they locked themselves in for 5 days, working up to 18 hours a day. The resulting 12 songs range from raw rock'n'roll (‘Ebb and Flow’, ‘Hoodathunkit’), catchy pop-rock (‘Dreaming of Trains’, ‘Claret Blue’), laid-back blues and grooves (‘Give Me A Ride’, ‘Less Than Tomorrow’), up-tempo country (‘Smoke Trails’) to wistful folk and late night melancholy (‘Floods Of Memories’, ‘Fucked Up Again’).

“This record is really about three good friends, who also happen to be extremely talented musicians, having a great time together. Luckily, it's not a private party and there is more than enough here to let the listener join in the good times.”  FATEA

“Adaptable and skilled… The songs show off their range. They are approaching the status of power-pop royalty.” AMERICANA UK

“A very cool and playable record that you'll want to listen to a good few times. 8/10” WHISPERIN’ & HOLLERIN’

“A cohesive collection of songs which somehow not only feel at home on the same album but also uniquely and intrinsically his own.” DANCING ABOUT ARCHITECTURE

M.G. BOULTER - WITH WOLVES THE LAMB WILL LIE

With Wolves The Lamb Will Lie is M G Boulter’s second full length album release, following 2013’s The Water And The Wave. Relocating this time from the shores of the Thames Delta to the peak district of Sheffield, Boulter has worked closely with award-winning producer Andy Bell (Bellowhead, Seasick Steve and Teenage Fanclub, as well as BBC Folk Album of the Year 2014 winner) to produce an album of lyrical depth and quiet brilliance. As with former projects, Boulter has surrounded himself with an array of musicians from different genres to help create his music: here one finds Ben Nicholls (The Full English, Seth Lakeman), Toby Kearney (These New Puritans), Sheffield songwriter Neil McSweeney and folk artist Lucy Farrell, among others.

The weird and wonderful coastal characters that inhabit Boulter’s songs feature again here, from the drunk down-and-out who has illusions of being Ernest Hemingway’s reincarnation in ‘Sean or Patrick’, to the fatalistic smoker father in ‘His Name Is Jean’. With Wolves The Lamb Will Lie reaffirms M G Boulter’s ability to conjure up compelling stories and mesmeric musical arrangements.
M G Boulter is a singer, songwriter and musician based on the Thames coast in England. Since 2009 he has been the principle songwriter and lead singer of roots rock band The Lucky Strikes and is a much sought after session musician who has toured with The Duke and the King, Simone Felice and Blue Rose Code, as well as recording with Dirk Powell, Rosalie Deighton and Vera Van Heeringen among many others.  He released his first solo record in 2013 titled The Water Or The Wave and an EP in 2014 with Scottish singer Samantha Whates called The Boatswain’s Manual. He has most recently been touring as a member of BBC Folk Award-winner Emily Portman’s band.

THE DELTA JACKS - TROUBLE AHEAD

Roots-rock and country-punk from the badlands of the Thames Delta!

The marshy hinterlands of South Essex have proved a fine breeding ground for bands over the past few decades. A wilderness where scores of musicians can practice their craft in isolation, giving them a distinct edge unlike their urban counterparts; from Dr Feelgood, Kursaal Flyers and Eddie & The Hot Rods to The Horrors, These New Puritans and The Lucky Strikes. It stands to reason that The Delta Jacks’ debut album will follow suit.

Formed in 2011, the band earned their spurs on the UK Americana circuit, saddling up and heading for The Smoke for gigs at such illustrious roots venues as the 12 Bar, The Gladstone and Camden’s Lock Tavern, as well as regular airplay on Resonance FM’s long-running Bonanza show. In that time headline shows have been interspersed with high profile support slots with the Jim Jones Revue, The Lucky Strikes, Mudlow and Son Of Dave.

Releasing their debut self-titled EP in 2013, over the past year the Jacks have been putting the finishing touches to their first full-length album Trouble Ahead at Church Road, Ford End and Broom Cupboard studios. The result is eleven barely-tameable tracks of banjo-infused hillbilly rock, destined to appeal to fans of Johnny Cash, Legendary Shack Shakers, Slim Cessna’s Auto Club, Violent Femmes, Cormac McCarthy and Zane Grey.

Delta Jacks are: Dominic Bauers – drums and backing vocals; Greg Beager – bass, keyboard and backing vocals; Ryan Bradshaw –  lead vocals, rhythm guitar and harmonica; and Trevor Reeves – lead guitar, banjo, mandolin and backing vocals.

The Delta Jacks play an official album launch at The Asylum, Chelmsford on Saturday 31 October, with support from The Lucky Strikes and Southern Generals.

“Essex’s finest proponents of country, blues, deep-south choogling and the rawest rock‘n’roll” –Bonanza, Resonance FM

“The Delta Jacks are a rough and ready hard edged country rock'n'roll act. High tempo and hard as nails, they're the ideal Saturday night Americana band!” - Rory Carlile, The Gladstone

BLANG RECORDS - LUCKY DIP (2005-2015)

Pioneering record label celebrates its first decade!

First launched ten years ago with the Fruit Machine compilation, London label Blang Records was born out of the monthly Blang nights at celebrated West End venue, The 12 Bar Club. Now a decade on, the label celebrates this significant anniversary with an 18-track compilation of their favourite artists along with not one but two birthday parties on consecutive Thursdays back where it all started (nearly) at the (newly relocated) 12 Bar!

Started by label supremo Joe Murphy and his Sergeant Buzfuz project around the dawn of the century, the Blang nights were then labelled after burgeoning ‘antifolk’ scene, which had spread wings from New York’s East Village, bringing with it the likes of Jeffrey Lewis and Moldy Peaches and a penchant for punk-folk storytelling with edge and humour. Blang was the first club night in London to embrace this vibrant scene and word spread like wild hot cakes.

Alongside Buzfuz, other homegrown acts like Filthy Pedro, David Cronenberg’s Wife and Malcolm Kaksois would follow under the antifolk banner, but by the time of the Fruit Machine compilation – a response by Murphy to a suggestion from The Band Of Holy Joy’s Johny Brown – it was clear that such a heading was inadequate for the diverse joys that Blang had to offer.

And diversity is the key to Lucky Dip – within its grooves you will find both folk and antifolk, along with punk, funk, rock and hip-hop. Buzfuz, Pedro, Kaksois and DCW are here of course, plus contributions from indie chart stars Milk Kan, Sheepy, Thee Cee Cees, Emily Capell, Paul Hawkins & The Awkward Silences, Lucy’s Diary, Dexter Bentley, Slate Islands, Matt Dolphin, Thomas Truax and more. A veritable roll-call of the great, the good and the glorious.

The first of Blang’s 10th Anniversary events – Lucky Dip 1 – takes place on Thurs 1 October and features Matt Dolphin, Slate Islands, Lucy’s Diary, JJ Crash, Sergeant Bufuz and David Cronenberg’s Wife.

Lucky Dip 2 on Thurs 8 October features Malcolm Kaksois, Emily Capell, Scrappy Hood (of Milk Kan), Thomas Truax, Paul Hawkins & The Awkward Silences and Eugene Ripper.

Both events take place at The 12 Bar Club, 203 Holloway Road, London N7 8DL. Door 7pm. £5 entry includes a FREE Lucky Dip CD.

BRIAN JAMES - THE GUITAR THAT DRIPPED BLOOD!

THE DAMNED and LORDS OF THE NEW CHURCH founder returns with an album of high-octane garage rock’n’roll!!!

With British punk pioneers The Damned the subject of a major documentary by acclaimed director Wes Orshoski and about to celebrate their 40th Anniversary next year, the return of original guitarist and founder member Brian James could not have been more timely.

Following on from 2011’s acoustic blues album Chateau Brian and new interpretations of Damned classics on Damned…If I Do in 2013, James returns with his first all new solid rock’n’roll album since 2006. Marrying the twin influences of ’77 Brit punk and Detroit street rock, The Guitar That Dripped Blood is an abrasive, coruscating album of solid garage-rocking guitar anthems; exactly what one would hope and expect from the author of the likes of ‘New Rose’ and ‘Neat Neat Neat’.

Along for the ride are a couple of special guests: Dead Boys legend Cheetah Chrome and Adam Becvare (Black Halos/LustKillers). All wrapped up in a sleeve by noted horror poster artist Graham Humphries, the result is between the eyes trash guitar dynamite!!

Initially released on limited edition blood red vinyl for Record Store Day, this full album release will be accompanied by the release of a limited edition 7-inch of ‘Walkin’ ‘Round Naked’.

A member of legendary punk precursors The London SS, Brian James formed The Damned in 1976 with a string of UK punk firsts – first single and album (both on the legendary Stiff label), major support tour (with T Rex), US tour. They burned bright and fast, before James split to form Tanz Der Youth (replaced on Black Sabbath’s ’78 UK tour by Van Halen – the rest is history!) followed by Brian James’ Brains aka The Hellions. He then hooked up with Sex Pistol Glen Matlock to back Iggy Pop on his North American New Values tour.

In ’82 James teamed up with Sham 69 bassist Dave Tregunna, Dead Boys singer Stiv Bators and Barracudas drummer Nicky Turner in Lords Of The New Church, releasing three albums with considerable global success. James then saw off the 20th Century in supergroup Mad For The Racket alongside the MC5’s Wayne Kramer, Blondie drummer Clem Burke and Duff McKagan from Guns’n’Roses. More recently he’s toured with old Damned buddy Rat Scabies as Scabies-James.

“I didn’t do this to be rich and famous. I started off because it’s the only thing I wanted to do in life, and it still is.”
