long-established fusion of power pop and country music it shows once again his mastery
of both, overlaid with many other fascinations, and featuring a couple of
significant guest collaborators in Martin Belmont (Ducks Deluxe, The Rumour)
and Peter Holsapple (REM, The dBs) who just happen to be musical giants.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

also allowed Bob to rein back on the more traditional country elements. The
title track proves a fine example of how they can infuse his compositions without
being blatant. He’ll reference particular Byrds and Monkees songs as “not

organically rather than dramatically”. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

both: “I knew it was right up his alley. Peter can do the vocal asides – the
‘yeahs’ and ‘woos’ I wish I could.”<o:p></o:p></span></div>

self-absorption is typical of the man. Getting Bob Collum to stay on the
subject of his music can be some task, though he does concede: “I like the new

The Beatles again. It may speak to his grounding, self-awareness, and sense of
standing on the shoulders of giants, but underplay it as he might <i>Pay Pack And

kind of spiritual healing and a way to keep breathing. It's difficult to
explain. I was in France gigging with Two Dollar Bash and I played the songs
for Mark Mulholland. He thought them worth recording and organised a session at

<span style="font-family: "Arial Narrow",sans-serif;">The past
is a foreign country, or so they say. No doubt Last Great Dreamers would agree
with that. Barely 18 months has passed since their last album – their first all
new full-length since their 2014 rebirth – and now the UK power-pop rockers
step up with a freshness and fire that would put many new bands to shame.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

Floor Renegades</i> comprises eleven infectious punk-pop floorshakers, replete
with dynamic shoutalong choruses and more hooks than audition day for a
particularly piratical panto season. Power-pop crunch and effortlessly melodic

of folky Faces-ness.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

with this album we get to repay their faith. It’s really been an organic

<span style="font-family: "Arial Narrow",sans-serif;">Four
years on from the release of the acclaimed <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">Burnt
Offerings</i>, London songwriter Trent Miller returns with his fourth album. <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">Time Between Us</i> carries on the
trajectory set by its predecessor, which saw Miller begin to emerge from the darkness
that overshadowed his first two albums <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">Cerberus</i>
(2009) and <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">Welcome To Inferno Valley</i>
(2011), towards a hopeful glimmer on the horizon and a new maturity in
songwriting. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 115%;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 115%;">
<span style="font-family: "Arial Narrow",sans-serif;">It’s
not all sweetness and light though: the past four years have seen Miller
navigate his way through a difficult divorce, as well as conquering his various
other demons, and this is reflected in the lyrics. Musically, the album is
considerably richer, its sonic timbres sighted midway between the melodic
folk-pop of The Byrds and the ethereal shimmer of the Cocteau Twins.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">Burnt Offerings</i>, <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">Time Between Us</i> was recorded at Reservoir Studios in North London,
co-produced by Trent with Graham Knight of Simple Kid and Orphan Colours. The
album also features Trent’s regular accomplices, guitarist Paul Cuddeford (Ian
Hunter, Cat Stevens, Holy Holy), violinist Barbara Bartz (Dana Immanuel, Penny
Black Remedy), cellist Bethany Porter and drummer Patrick Degenhardt.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 115%;">
<span style="font-family: "Arial Narrow",sans-serif;">Born
and raised in the countryside of north-western Italy, fuelled by dreams of
rock’n’roll, Miller made his way to London as a youth, joining the
just-blooming Americana circuit. Carrying with him the dual influence of the
Beats and darkly troubled songwriters like Gene Clark, Jeffrey Lee Pierce and
Thin White Rope’s Guy Kyser, he made his recorded debut on the album <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">Hidden Desert</i>, a tribute to the latter
much missed Northern Californians. Releasing his debut <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">Cerberus</i> himself, he later signed up to release his second album <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">Welcome To Inferno Valley</i> with the
recording arm of highly-regarded underground magazine, Bucketfull Of Brains,
also responsible for John Murry’s groundbreaking <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">The Graceless Age</i>.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="font-family: "Arial Narrow",sans-serif; font-size: 11.0pt; line-height: 115%; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman";">As the title suggests, <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">Restless</i>
- the fourth studio album from English songwriter John Forrester - explores the
transient underpinning of the lone musician: songs of travel, displacement,
creativity and disappointment sit alongside those that explore the journey we
all make through life. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 115%;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 115%;">
<span style="font-family: "Arial Narrow",sans-serif; font-size: 11.0pt; line-height: 115%; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman";">While working on the album, a close family member’s terminal
illness forced Forrester to pause mid-album and spend time back in his home
town to care for his loved one. “You make a life for yourself,” he reflects. “But
then you’re pulled back to something in the past. Back in the town you grew up
in. There’s definitely a comfort in familiarity but also a disconnect, as you’re
now effectively just a visitor.” <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 115%;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 115%;">
<span style="font-family: "Arial Narrow",sans-serif; font-size: 11.0pt; line-height: 115%; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman";">These events seeped into Forrester’s writing. “It certainly
coloured the album. There are songs that wouldn’t have otherwise existed. The
album changed shape.” Previously recorded songs no longer seemed right and new
work emerged as Forrester’s world changed irrevocably – and when recording
resumed, a broader canvas was laid out upon which the new songs were afforded
more room to breathe and be heard. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 115%;">

<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 115%;">
<span style="font-family: "Arial Narrow",sans-serif; font-size: 11.0pt; line-height: 115%; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman";">Working with a producer - Fairground Attraction’s Roy Dodds
– for the first time, Forrester was encouraged to play less and not fill every
pocket of the aural spectrum. The result is a cohesive yet adventurous album
that, although reminiscent of Forrester’s earlier work, explores new ground
both musically and lyrically. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="font-family: "Arial Narrow",sans-serif; font-size: 11.0pt; line-height: 115%; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman";">From the a cappella opener ‘Richmond Hill’, where the singer
earmarks a place of personal pilgrimage for future reflection, to ‘Somewhere I
Can Be’, the lead-off single, a song for “all the bits of us that we leave
behind”, the general mood of the LP captures the essence, drive and
complexities of the restless soul. ‘Butterfly Catcher’ “was inspired by people
that seek to take your time and energy when you don’t want to give it. It’s
about boundaries and not giving too much of yourself away”, while ‘Restless
Bones’ is an autobiographical look at the passing of time and friendships.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

very different sides owing to its divided recording process. It’s also a record
that relishes in a newfound sense of experimentation and collaboration, while
staying true to its creator’s restless soul.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "arial narrow" , sans-serif;">Texan
songwriter Ash Gray returns with his second solo album </span><i style="font-family: "Arial Narrow", sans-serif;">Chicken Wire</i><span style="font-family: "arial narrow" , sans-serif;">. Having relocated over the
past decade from Austin to Sheffield via New York City, Ash is, in the truest
sense, a troubadour, falling in with likeminded folk wherever he ends up.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">

<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: "arial narrow" , sans-serif;">Nowhere
is this better exemplified than on <i>Chicken
Wire</i>. Ash recruited friends from the Sheffield music scene to lay down the
basic tracks, later inviting musicians from back home in Austin to add their
own touch. Ash then collaborated with noted Austin producer Chris ‘Frenchie’ Smith
(Meat Puppets, Datsuns, Dandy Warhols etc) on the final mix. The end result blends
country and bluegrass with undertones of psych, rewriting the grand Austin
tradition of the ‘cosmic cowboy’.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="font-family: "arial narrow" , sans-serif;">Speaking about the recording, Gray says, “The album represents a nice bridge that’s been developing between Sheffield and Austin in the three years that I’ve called Sheffield home. I met so many amazing musicians in Sheffield and have tightened connections with old and new acquaintances in Austin since I began working on these recordings and I was interested in trying to include everyone that I’d been playing with.”</span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: "arial narrow" , sans-serif;">Born and
raised in the US, Ash began travelling to the UK at the end of the 90s, where
he formed punkgrass outfit The High Class Family Butchers with future members
of Menlo Park and Kings Of The South Seas, doing brisk business at the
forefront of the London alt.country scene. Winding up in NYC, he took the
guitar job in legendary biker band The Cycle Sluts From Hell, before forming
the psych-pop ensemble Ash Gray & The Girls, releasing the acclaimed album <i>Born In The Summer</i>. Later retracing his
Yorkshire roots, he finally released his debut solo album <i>Once</i> <i>I Got Burned</i> in
2014. Most recently he’s been helping facilitate the musical twinning of his
hometown with the city of Angers in western France. </span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "Arial",sans-serif; font-size: 11.0pt;">Just a matter of months after their widely
acclaimed album <i>Journey To X</i>, there’s no stopping the rejuvenated
Brainiac 5 as they return with the aptly-titled <i>We’re Ready!</i><o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "Arial",sans-serif; font-size: 11.0pt;">It seems that the band had so much great
material worked up for the <i>Journey</i> sessions that they allowed the
natural momentum to carry them over, bringing additional material to proceedings
to round out the process. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "Arial",sans-serif; font-size: 11.0pt;">As well as introducing new songs, the band took
the opportunity to revisit their past: ‛Trotsky’, which appeared on their
classic ‛78 EP <i>Mushy Doubt</i>, is retooled here as ‛She’s Free’, sung by
returning guest vocalist Jessie Pie; ‛Night Games’, a song dictated through a
ouija board conversation with Jimi Hendrix(!) many years ago, is presented in
studio version for the first time; and ‛Space Is The Place’, the track that
kickstarted the band’s 21st Century rebirth, is given the full bells
and whistles treatment it always deserved. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: "Arial",sans-serif; font-size: 11.0pt; mso-bidi-font-weight: bold;">Emerging in the mid-70s out of the UK’s isolated yet
thriving South-Western scene, the Brainiac 5 relocated to London, where their <i>Mushy Doubt</i> EP had already caused a
stir. Sharing stages with the likes of The Soft Boys and The Barracudas and
finding fans in John Peel and Alex Chilton, they split before their debut album
<i>World Inside</i> was released through
celebrated psych label Reckless (Bevis Frond, Black Sun Ensemble, Mu). <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: "Arial",sans-serif; font-size: 11.0pt; mso-bidi-font-weight: bold;">With frontman Charlie Taylor returning from years in
the US, the Brainiacs reconvened, resulting in 2013’s Sun Ra-inspired <i>Space Is The Place</i> EP which garnered
effusive reviews from the likes of <i>The Wire</i> and <i>Shindig!</i>
Releasing the <i>When Silence Was Sound</i>
anthology, the all-new <i>Exploding Universe
</i>and <i>Journey To X </i>in quick
succession the Brainiac 5 have earned praise from <i>Mojo</i>, <i>Record
Collector</i>, <i>R2</i>, <i>Vive Le Rock</i>, <i>Prog</i> and <i>Louderthanwar</i>,
as well as from psych and outsider websites around the world. </span><span style="font-family: "Arial",sans-serif; font-size: 11.0pt;"><o:p></o:p></span></div>

accessible (funky beats and grooves) yet experimental enough to break

Encouraged by the media and fan reaction to last year’s Beautiful Monsters retrospective and accompanying reunion shows, the surviving members of Folk Devils are joining forces with Manchester's Inca Babies for a handful of summer dates around the UK.<br />
<br />
Folk Devils - fronted by the charismatic Ian Lowery - and Inca Babies both released acclaimed music in the mid-80s that helped define the emerging adrenalized blues-inflected swamp-rock scene that had spawned the likes of The Birthday Party, The Gun Club and The Scientists, recording multiple sessions for John Peel’s legendary BBC Radio 1 programme.<br />
<br />
With the release of the long-overdue anthology Beautiful Monsters (Singles & Demo Recordings 1984-86) last summer through Optic Nerve Recordings, original Folk Devils guitarist Kris Jozajtis and bassist Mark Whiteley decided to reconvene the band with late-period drummer John Hamilton and Dave Hodgson of post-punks Parting Shots taking the place of Lowery, who sadly died in 2001.<br />

The Inca Babies reformed around founding member Harry Stafford in 2007 and have been active since, releasing their most recent album The Stereo Plan in 2014. Now a 3-piece, the band is completed by drummer Rob Haynes (The Membranes, Goldblade) and bass player Vince Hunt, formerly of A Witness.<br />
<br />
Speaking about the Folk Devils reunion, Jozajtis says, “Getting back together for live shows happened because of the release of Beautiful Monsters last September, and the collective need of the surviving Devils to mark that event by doing what we used to do best - playing the songs live. It certainly wasn't about nostalgia, although there was always a sense of unfinished business after we called it a day in the 80s. Of course, we wanted to honour the memory and singular talent of Ian. Much of what he wrote is even more resonant now, as many critics realize. Finding Dave Hodgson, who knew Lowery and has a real connection with the material, was crucial to making the reunion work. However, we also wanted to see if we could rekindle the fire which had characterized the sound of the band. I guess audiences can judge whether we've succeeded in that for themselves. But the fact that we're all investing time, energy and money in this project will tell you what we think.”<br />

London-based Americana and mature pop act Proudfoot are to play an intimate semi-acoustic show in East London next month.<br />
<br />
The band, who released their second album <i>Flower Of London</i> to some acclaim last autumn, play the Railway Tavern, St Jude Street, Dalston on Thursday 1 June.<br />
<br />
The band is the brainchild of filmmaker and songwriter Michael Proudfoot, one-time frontman of 90s Brit honky-tonk band The Highbury Hotdogs, together with guitarist Duncan Kerr of legendary Stiff Records pub rockers Plummet Airlines, new wave powerpoppers The Favourites. The line-up is completed by bassist Wayne Worrell and drummer Joe Malone. Expect flavours of good-time 60s country, laced with the influence of late-70s new wave songwriters like Nick Lowe, Elvis Costello and Difford & Tilbrook.<br />
<br />
Support comes from North Yorkshire-via-Brentford songwriter Phil Martin. An original member of The Shanakies (Blur's support band of choice on their <i>Parklife</i> tour), multi-instrumentalist Phil has also served time with The Men They Couldn't Hang, Vic Godard & The Subway Sect and The Bitter Springs. He's currently preparing the follow-up to 2013's <i>Don't Be Afraid Of The Dark</i>, which legendary music journalist Geoff Barton, writing in Classic Rock magazine, compared very favourably to Kevin Ayers.<br />

Leeds' finest exponent of country-folk 12-string, Serious Sam Barrett returns to play The Railway Tavern Ale House in Dalston, London on Thursday 4 May.<br />
<br />
Sam was invited to play MuleFreedom's first ever acoustic event at The Railway back in 2012, and this will be his sixth visit. It comes hot on the heels of his latest album <i>The Dime Horseshoe</i>, recorded with James The Fang from Alabama folk punks The Pine Hill Haints on an island in the mouth of Mobile Bay. Buy it <a href="https://serioussambarrett.bandcamp.com/album/the-dime-horseshoe" target="_blank">here</a>.<br />
<br />
Says Sam, "Playing the Railway is a beautifully informal and intimate gig. Everyone is made to feel welcome and people are there to hear great music. It attracts a crowd as diverse as London itself. A great place to play."<br />
<br />
MuleFreedom hosts an acoustic event at The Railway Tavern on the first Thursday of every month.<br />
<br />
Sam will be playing two solo sets, kicking off at 9pm. Admission is FREE!<br />

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEii5Ev9UVPjmdT1ODLcLgyyJpIVSEIEHFNxfXtlACJ7lolSRgJj0SZ3sz5GS-KwaSO2fSu4cuIvLExyANcemTI69bMSY4PBMFK_Yg3sQKAFAE1EtIkeC_1HctSy_JWM1OgsLan8LDJ0TTkC/s1600/redmoon+sleeve+lo+res.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEii5Ev9UVPjmdT1ODLcLgyyJpIVSEIEHFNxfXtlACJ7lolSRgJj0SZ3sz5GS-KwaSO2fSu4cuIvLExyANcemTI69bMSY4PBMFK_Yg3sQKAFAE1EtIkeC_1HctSy_JWM1OgsLan8LDJ0TTkC/s320/redmoon+sleeve+lo+res.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">They say you can’t keep a good band down, and that’s certainly true of UK roots band Red Moon Joe. Buoyed by the success of Midnight Trains, the first Red Moon Joe album in more than 20 years, they return with the newly minted <i>Time & Life</i>. And as with their previous albums, they continue to move forward, reminding us of the true essence of time and life: to never stay in one place for too long.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">This time around, the band headed down to Liverpool’s Elevator studios, laying down their bluegrass-inflected tracks, this time augmented with keyboards and a 3-piece brass section and a little help from some special guests including Del Amitri’s Justin Currie, Virginian singer-songwriter Cathryn Craig and Jason Isbell’s guitarist Sadler Vaden. The result is an album that brings together Red Moon Joe’s mid-80s cowpunk origins through 90s alt.country, making Time & Life an album for right now, that does both the band and UK Americana proud.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">These songs move away from traditional themes of lost love and heartache, drawing on the universal issues of ageing and the maelstrom of feelings, joys and anxieties that come with it. ‘Slow Sun Wheeling’ takes its title, like the album, from a poem by Algernon Swinburne; it’s essentially about regret but also living life to the full and squeezing every bit of joy that you can into every day. ‘Elvis, Townes And Hank’ considers the price of fame, while ‘Shadows’ is about an old friend fighting a battle with the bottle after the breakdown of a relationship. Another standout cut is ‘Orgreave’, about the spirit of defiance and the dignity shown by miners and their families in the face of injustice and violence. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Red Moon Joe were originally formed in Lancashire in 1985 by Mark Wilkinson, who was already forging a career as the go-to guitarist for visiting Nashville legends. With cowpunk and paisley underground in vogue, the band toured constantly throughout the UK and Europe, releasing the album Arms Of Sorrow on the iconic Run River label, also home to Bert Jansch and John Renbourn. The band split in 1993, with Wilkinson resuming his career as a ‘hired gun’, sharing stages with the likes of Townes Van Zandt, Steve Earle, Guy Clark and Emmylou Harris. Wilkinson reconvened Red Moon Joe in 2010, eventually releasing <i>Midnight Trains</i> to considerable praise three years later.</span><br />

journey. It’s a bit more slick than my London skiffle punk/country

cross-cultural sound going on . I’m still so excited that these

ago in New York just before my dad died. I’d heard a poem by Dylan
called ‘Last Thoughts On Woody Guthrie’, which said, ‘If it’s
hope that you’re seeking …you’ll find it at the Grand Canyon at
sundown”. Last year I finally flew back out to the USA to see the
Grand Canyon. I watched the sun go down, then caught a train across
America. 32 hours later I arrived in Nashville, Tennessee where I
recorded that same song about the Grand Canyon that I wrote 20 years
beforehand. In 12 hours we had recorded a whole album.” </span></span>

<div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="font-family: Ariel;">Friday 10 March
2017 sees the release of Sheffield songwriter Neil McSweeney’s
fourth album, <i>A Coat Worth Wearing</i>. Produced by award-winning
folk producer Andy Bell and the second release for new imprint Hudson
Records, the album builds on the success of its predecessor, <i>Cargo</i>,
displaying a marked development in Neil’s sound and approach. Its
nine songs were conceived as a piece and subsequently recorded
together, largely in full-band live-takes, over seven days in the
beautiful Welsh countryside.</span></div>
<div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<br />
</div>
<div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="font-family: Ariel;">Neil
McSweeney emerged from the flowering of Sheffield music that gave the
world Richard Hawley and Slow Club and has since established himself
as ‘a songwriter of rare ability’(R2). Setting lyrics that deal
with the contrasts and contradictions of life to romantic melodies as
hopeful as they are melancholy, McSweeney’s finely-crafted songs
have been championed by his peers as well as across national radio
and mainstream and specialist press. Since the release of <i>Cargo</i>
in 2013, McSweeney has made increasingly big waves on the
English folk scene picking up main stage festival appearances and
collaborating with the likes of Jon Boden and Fay Hield. </span></div>

<div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="font-family: Arno Pro Caption, serif;">Rejuvenated
psych-explorers THE BRAINIAC 5 return with </span><span style="font-family: Arno Pro Caption, serif;"><i>Journey
To X</i></span><span style="font-family: Arno Pro Caption, serif;">, their second
full-length outing since their 2012 reunification. Buoyed by the
success of 2015’s </span><span style="font-family: Arno Pro Caption, serif;"><i>Exploding
Universe</i></span><span style="font-family: Arno Pro Caption, serif;">, and an
appearance on Cherry Red's acclaimed </span><span style="font-family: Arno Pro Caption, serif;"><i>Another
Splash Of Colour</i></span><span style="font-family: Arno Pro Caption, serif;">
psych box set, the band have made a quick return to Alchemy Studios
in North London and with the help of producer and engineer Kenny
Jones and the arrival of new drummer Joe Malone, have stripped back
to the two guitars, bass and drums format of past glories, yet
continue to move forward with renewed energy and fresh ideas. </span>

<div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<br />
</div>
<div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="font-family: Arno Pro Caption, serif;">Say
the band, “After experimenting with sax and flute for our last
album, we thought that this time we would revert to our core
four-piece psych/punk guitar orientated template. With the
introduction of the powerhouse drumming of Joe Malone, we’ve
certainly come up with some blistering music in this vein. However,
somewhere along the journey we seem to have also wandered off on some
other new paths. A touch of the smoky jazz cellar and African
influences, a slight nod to country-blues and beyond. With lyrics
inspired and influenced by Elizabeth Jennings, Robert Graves and </span><span style="font-family: Arno Pro Caption, serif;"><i>The
Golden Bough</i></span><span style="font-family: Arno Pro Caption, serif;">, we
think this makes for a heady and intriguing mix, yet still all
somehow manages to sound like The Brainiac 5. The journey has been
exciting and fulfilling and has resulted in what we feel is our most
complete and accomplished work to date.” </span>

<div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="font-family: Arno Pro Caption, serif;">Emerging
in the mid-70s out of the UK’s isolated yet thriving South-Western
scene, the Brainiac 5 relocated to London, where their </span><span style="font-family: Arno Pro Caption, serif;"><i>Mushy

caused a stir. Sharing stages with the likes of The Soft Boys and The
Barracudas and finding fans in John Peel and Alex Chilton, they split
before their debut album </span><span style="font-family: Arno Pro Caption, serif;"><i>World

garnered effusive reviews from the likes of The Wire and Shindig! The

Palomino Company, the record – Tommy’s third as a solo artist – draws on a
wealth of musical styles, from gospel-tinged soul to delicate pop balladry and
driving rock ’n’ roll, while at its centre sits its author’s unmistakable
voice. Fragile and reflective one moment, bristling with soulful intensity the
next, it’s a unique ingredient of Tommy’s music, and one that has aided his
rise, over 20 years, from frontman with raucous cult rockers Swank Deluxe to
multi-faceted solo performer and respected face on the Dallas music scene. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

bouquets for their sweetheart – a Southern tradition at homecoming football
games – while the album’s centerpiece,
the anthemic ‘Save Me (The Ballad of Odell Barnes Jr)’, finds him pondering the
plight of a high-school friend who, convicted of murder, ended up on Death Row.

sincerity licked, too. Can I Lay Down Next To You? and Simple Song, the album’s
most tender tracks, make the listener feel as if they’re eavesdropping on
private moments in their author’s life. In fact, so direct is the latter song
that the singer felt himself squirm when he played it to producer/guitarist
Simon Moor and multi-instrumentalist John O’Sullivan – the album’s co-writers
and two people who, alongside drummer Dan Tilbury and keyboardist/engineer Nick
Beere, make up a creative team for whom Tommy has “tremendous respect.” <o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="font-family: "arno pro caption" , serif;">From the
marshlands of the Thames Delta comes the fifth album from Southend on Sea’s
Lucky Strikes. <i>The Motion And The Moving On</i> is the band’s most personal album to
date, covering everything from dead-end jobs and missing home to overwhelming
grief and mental turmoil. But ultimately this is an album about salvation through
music. That life on the road, with your brothers, can save your soul. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

2006, the Lucky Strikes have released four critically-acclaimed albums
encompassing garage blues, spaghetti western psych and Celtic folk. Their
self-titled debut was recorded warts and all in their hometown of Southend -
rough and maybe not quite ready, it was full of the piss, spit and aggression
of youth. This was followed by <i>The
Chronicles Of Solomon Quick</i> in 2009. A patchwork narrative centred on the
man who killed Delta blues pioneer Robert Johnson. The record saw the band move
from the monochrome palette of their debut to a more widescreen vison of
Americana. Piano, strings and pedal steel wove together to reveal a
compelling musical tale. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

story of Frankie Valentinez, a boxer who took a bribe to throw a fight and then
descended into madness. For 2013’s <i>Exile And
The Sea</i>, the band found inspiration closer to home. From the archives of
their local newspaper offices, they retold stories of the carnival queens,

much. Nobody seems to have heard of them. They’re called The Screaming Blue

element of The Clash in them that I really like. But there’s something else
there. I’m not really sure what it is. There’s an exciting guitar player. He’s
a sort of a new wave guitar player, but they’re an angry mob from London.”</i></div>

<div class="MsoNormal">
<i>It’s been six years since Proudfoot released
the BJ Cole-produced </i>Lincolnshire<i>, an album with its boots in Nashville but
its head in the English county of Michael Proudfoot’s birth in the prairies of
the East Midlands.<o:p></o:p></i></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Since then, Michael
and guitarist/collaborator Duncan Kerr have been meeting in the former’s
basement, recording demos for a new record. <i>Flower
Of London</i> is the result. Duncan Kerr is a veteran guitar wrangler from
Stiff Records recording artists Plummet Airlines and their spin-off The Favourites,
two almost-made-it outfits that morphed out of Nottingham’s pub rock and punk
scene. Michael, then singing in wine bars and restaurants to bolster his
student grant, was a fan of both these bands. “I thought, if ever I have a
band, I want that guitar player in it,” he says of Kerr. A mixture of
happenstance and necessity brought the two together almost ten years ago and
they have been working together in London ever since as Kerr’s other gig in
psych-punk outfit The Brainiac 5 allows.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Both Proudfoot and
Kerr knew that this record would be different from <i>Lincolnshire</i>. “I love country music and early rock n’ roll, but I
am essentially a child of the 60s,” says Proudfoot. “I can still vividly
remember the moment The Beatles came into my world via <i>Thank Your Lucky Stars</i>. We lived, literally, in the middle of
nowhere surrounded by potato and wheat fields, The Beatles sound made it seem
as if anything were possible and I fell for it hook line and sinker. Music has
been in my life ever since”<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<i>Flower Of London</i> coalesces Michael Proudfoot’s interests in The
Beatles and the Beat Boom, soul, folk and reggae with Kerr’s virtuoso powerpop/punk/country-rock
guitar chops into something not too far from the mature New Wave pop of
Costello, Parker and Difford & Tilbrook. This time, Michael’s songs are
drawn from a wider, more urban spectrum. <i>Flower
Of London</i> trades in the anomalies of life, love, leaving and those he has
known, good and bad. Album opener ‘Pathfinders’ is about his mother’s first
fiancé, an RAF pilot who perished over the English Channel. “The good thing
about songwriting,” says Proudfoot, “….is that you can make a single statement
about a lot of things or a statement about a single moment. It seems to me the
things that affect us most are like that, they are global and big like politics
and war or tiny moments in the macro when someone says or does something you
love or hate…. That’s what this record is about”.</div>
